BRAC Development Institute (BDI) in collaboration with The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) organized a two day long workshop on “Road Map for Bangladesh towards Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)” at BRAC University on 4 and 5 March 2012.
Citizenship, a research wing of BDI is conducting a research on “The Social Impact of Microfinance on Gender Norms and Behavior,” in collaboration with Institute of Microfinance, the Population Council in New York. The research constituted of 300 rural and urban PSU’s (Primary Sampling Units) located all over Bangladesh. A community survey and mapping have been conducted in Phase I of this research.
The Fourth Annual Master’s in Development Practice (MDP) Summit took place from Sunday, February 5, through Friday, February 10, 2012 at BRAC Centre for Development Management (BCDM) facility in Savar, Dhaka, Bangladesh, with the support of the summit host, BRAC Development Institute (BDI). Representatives (vice chancellors, rectors, deans, directors, and others) from all 22 MDP programs and 5 universities that are interested in developing MDP programs were in attendance, bringing together close to 70 individuals representing 18 different countries; a truly global gathering.
BRAC Development Institute (BDI), BRAC University, organized a two day international conference in Dhaka, titled “Transcending Binaries: Islam and Politics in South Asia”, on the 18th and 19th of December, 2010. The BDI conference critically reflected on the institutional and non-institutional ways in which Islam increasingly presents itself in the public space in South Asia. It aimed to understand the ideas through which Islamic appeal is generated, and through which Islam stakes its claims on modern nation states and their citizens. The conference had two objectives. The first, to understand people’s engagement with Islam and second, to expand the concepts and analyses that can assist in developing a democratic and progressive strategy of engagement. Dr Mashiur Rahman, Adviser to the Honorable Prime Minister on Economic Affairs inaugurated the conference. Professor Saba Mahmood, University of California at Berkeley was the keynote speaker at the inaugural session. Tariq Ali gave a speech via videoconference live from London, on the Clash of Fundamentalisms. Professor Gowher Rizvi, Adviser to the Honorable Prime Minister on International Affairs gave the closing presentation.
Deepening Democracy, Building Citizenship and Promoting Participation Research Programme(‘Citizenship’ in short) is part of a larger research programme under the Development Research Centre (DRC) on Citizenship, Participation and Accountability, Institute of Development Studies, Sussex University, UK. Eight countries (Angola, Bangladesh, Brazil, India, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria and South Africa) across three continents are involved in this partnership. The programme receives support from Department of International Development (DFID), UK.
The theme Empowering Work, takes the ‘work’ entry point into investigating the relationships between paid work and empowerment and exploring the implications of changing markets in the wake of globalization for women’s rights, security and wellbeing as workers as a pathway of empowerment. The researches in this theme utilized quantitative data to generating new findings about women’s labour market participation.
The theme Conceptualizing Empowerment investigates conceptions of empowerment and change, encompassing substantive empirical as well as conceptual work on measuring empowerment and change in women’s lives and contextualising meanings and practices of empowerment in our different regions The research projects conducted seeks to portray the lived realities and struggles of ordinary women and the different discourses of empowerment prevalent in national arena.

Building Constituencies for Gender Justice
From May 2009, BRAC Development Institute and the Department of Architecture, BRAC University, are offering an intensive three-month postgraduate certificate course on Management of Land Acquisition, Resettlement and Rehabilitation (MLARR). First of its kind in Bangladesh and among a very few worldwide, the course introduces concepts of land management, sustainable development and involuntary resettlement as well as tools and techniques for social impact assessments and resettlement planning. The course is offered to professionals, graduate and postgraduate students from various academic backgrounds including urban planning, engineering, environment science, social sciences and overall project management.
