Economic Transformation

The poor of the global South often lack control over their economic lives and cannot own what they produce nor the methods of production (such as agricultural products and land). Further, the extreme poor are excluded too often from mainstream economic development activities (such as microfinance and social protection), a reality that reinforces the seemingly ironclad poverty cycle in which the poor are trapped. To help economically transform the lives of the poor, BDI takes on the following activities:
  • Determining how best to create a ladder for the poorest to graduate out of extreme poverty through linking safety nets and financial services.
  • Analyzing value chains and conducting sub-sector analyses to determine how to use effectively the government, private sector and NGOs to create markets for the poor.
  • Identifying new methodologies to extend the frontiers of financial access for the poor.
  • Examining methods of guarding the extreme poor from shocks in the form of safety nets and social protection.
