Urban Poverty & Climate Change

Printer-friendly versionSend to friendPDF version

BDI launched this research project to explore and build knowledge on the links between climate change and urban poverty. With more than 27% of its population living in urban areas, Bangladesh is experiencing rapid urbanization. As urban population is growing, so is urban poverty. Climate change is exacerbating the poverty situation and will affect increasing number of people in the coming years.

Climatic processes, such as sea level rise, poses a serious danger of displacing millions of people from the coastal areas by inundating their habitats and thereby inducing migration of more poor people to the cities. Climatic variability, such as the growing number and intensity of disaster events are increasing the sufferings of the poor. The knowledge built and improved through this action research will provide significant inputs in understanding the interaction between climate change and urban poverty. BDI’s engagement in meaningful alliances with international organizations such as the University of Manchester’s Brooks World Poverty Institute promotes a multidisciplinary approach to identifying key processes in adaptation to climate change for the urban poor.
