This project will examine the narratives that are generated through the cultural production of ethnic minority peoples from Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT). Hill people have encountered tensions between dominant Bengali narrative on nationalism, identity and sexuality. The research looks at the narratives of the Hill people which remain excluded and submerged and the process through which their stories are now being related by minority people.
The aim of the research is to challenge the parameters by which mainstream media stereotypes minority communities and constructs a “hegemonic” national identity. It is hoped that the research will explore the many ways in which certain narratives are reworked by marginalized communities to become vehicles for the expression of women’s agency as well as social transformation.
The field work for this Research will be conducted on December 2009 – February 2010 among CHT media personalities and viewers (women) who watch these productions.
