Media and Women

This project enquires into whether and where possibilities of empowerment in terms of sexuality open up through the media, and examine changing representations of women and female sexuality. The research seeks to understand how women in different sites and classes in Bangladesh engage with television and attach meaning to the images that are represented on screen.

The field work for the Media and Women Research was conducted between June 2008 – September 2008 among lower income, lower-middle, and middle class respondents in nine field sites. The field sites were of four categories: urban areas, peri-urban areas, universities and a working women’s hostel. Focus group discussions, in-depth interviews and participant observation were some of the methods used in the collection of research data.

A comparative report on the above, bringing together findings from Bangladesh and Pakistan is in process.
