A core area of BDI research is economic transformations. BDI aspires to set up pilots in different countries to test out new models and new ideas. This will include dissemination of successful interventions at BRAC (especially BRAC’s ultra poor program) and elsewhere. This research theme also encompasses advocacy with policy makers and donors to adopt good practice lessons from successful programs.

Following the economic transformation theme, BDI will be conducting research on:

  • Graduation: determining how best to create a ladder for the poorest to graduate out of extreme poverty through linking safety nets and financial services.
  • Building Markets: analyzing value chains and conducting sub-sector analysis to determine how to effectively use the government, the private sector and NGOs to create markets for the poor.
  • Financial Services for the Poorest:
    1.   identifying new methodologies to extend the frontiers of financial access for ever larger numbers of the poorest
    2.   conducting national surveys to determine the lower limits of microcredit; who are being reached and who require social protection and other strategies
    3.   publishing an annual “State of Microfinance Report”; in collaboration with other partners this is to become a South Asia annual report.
