Printer-friendly versionSend to friendPDF version

The 100-day Employment Generation Programme (EGP) is a social safety net programme of the Government of Bangladesh that aims to provide guaranteed employment for the targeted extreme poor citizens during the lean seasons. This initiative came in response to the soaring food prices, which are especially hard to keep up with for the poorest and the jobless poor.

Evaluation of Phase I of EGP

The National Food Policy Capacity Strengthening Programme (NFPCSP), implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, was requested to carry out a programme evaluation on EGP phase I by the Government of Bangladesh. The organization (NFPCSP) worked with BDI and the Research and Evaluation Division (RED) of BRAC to complete this evaluation. The paper resulting from this is available at http://www.nfpcsp.org/100_day_final.pdf

Qualitative Research on EGP

BDI's work provides the qualitative component in the overall evaluation. The institute was invited to collaborate for its clear competitive advantage in gathering field level qualitative knowledge and its capacity to carry out extensive field research. After being submitted to the government, the paper which corresponds with, as well as enriches much of the other studies conducted on the programme, has received positive feedback. Findings from the qualitative research reveal that beneficiaries reported mostly positive impacts and want the programme to continue. The program has helped them survive through the price hikes, as well as escape unemployment during the lean period. Food consumption remained steady for beneficiaries and many reported becoming free form loan dependency as well.
